A pendant as chic and elegant as Audrey Hepburn's made famous, the immortal little black...

... or like Darth Vader's cloak!
Certain days of the week are also known as black. Let's take a trip to America to take a look at two of them.

FIRSTLY BLACK THURSDAY

It was 24 October 1929, when the crash of the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street caused a crisis that spread around the world.
Ten years later, the then US president, F.D. Roosevelt, recognised that a change in the calendar of American holidays could have a tangible economic impact. To stimulate the economy, he moved the celebration of Thanksgiving from last to the fourth Thursday of November. The change seems small, but given that months happen to have five Thursdays - it resulted in an extra week for the pre-Christmas shopping rush. This one officially starts just after Thanksgiving.

After a Thursday off, however, it's tempting not to return to work the next day, so....

THEN BLACK FRIDAY

In the 1950s, it became very common in the USA to get fired from work on the Friday after Thanksgiving, for health reasons. Employers took a loss, and the 'colds' gained a long weekend and set off en masse to do their first pre-Christmas shopping. In Philadelphia, this additionally coincided with the annual big event - a football game played by the Army and Navy teams. The city was thus extremely crowded, which had to be managed by police officers who not only could not take time off, but also worked overtime. It was they - overworked and discontented, who coined the term that has become embedded in the vernacular, and which we still use today - Black Friday.

Today, Black Friday is a public holiday in most US states, and the shopping frenzy of the day has become a tradition that has taken over the world.
